Memoir Writing

Summary
Memoirs are a great way to look in to our pasts. In Jerry Waxler's writing, he says that writing memoirs can be a very therapeutic thing and that it can help a person to look into their past and see something that happened long ago or something that they never really thought through completely. He says that it can help you to deal with a negative experience and overcome any mournful struggle. When both Antoinette Franklin and her niece Iriel Franklin spoke of Hurricane Katrina, they were "writing" their memoirs without actually writing them. When Antoinette spoke of her memories of the hurricane she talked about how she wasn't able to break done because everyone around was breaking down and she had to be strong for them. She spoke of a time in her life that was so tragic but she did it and that point in her life meant something to her and helped shape her into the person she is now. Both her and her niece relived something in their past that they struggled with and it was hard for them, but it helped them at the same time by getting it out and letting it go.

Reaction
Jerry Waxler's writing and Antoinette and her niece's talking about the hurricane definitely showed me that writing and speaking about my past is a good way of getting things of my chest. I felt for the Franklins and felt the sadness in their voices. Jerry Waxler's writing made me think of things that happened in my passed that really brought me down and put a "rough patch" in my life. It showed me that if I just wrote it out, memoir or not, it would be an easier thing for me to deal with later in the future.

3 Questions
How does writing a memoir help to deal with talking about certain situation later on in the future?
How does writing a memoir change a persons outlook on life?
With the Hurricane Katrina victims, how does talking about the event affect themselves?

I like that you mention the importance of "writing" it out. I think that is very important.

Great points!

You made a lot of good points from the two selections that we just read. Also,it seems that you got the full lesson behind each story that was told. You gave good incite in to the story by referring to what the people said or wrote. I like how you illustrated the differences in the stories of how memoirs can be written and also spoken or recorded.I agree on what you say about how writing down your promblems can help you in the future however it also can help with a promblem that is current.I believe that writing a memoir changes a outlook on a person life by giving them more understanding of themselves and what drives them to do what they do.
